KLUG, FLETCHER WIN OPENING SNOWBOARD EVENT
World CUp Starting Positions at Stake
Copper GS: Klug, Fletcher Win


COPPER MOUNTAIN, Colo. (Nov. 11) -- Snowboarders Chris Klug (Aspen, CO)
and Rosey Fletcher (Girdwood, AK) -- the first two riders to qualify for
the inaugural U.S. Olympic Snowboard Team in 1998 -- captured
Continental Cup giant slalom wins Sunday with World Cup start spots on
the line.

Based on results from the GS and a parallel GS -- the Olympic alpine
snowboard event -- Sunday at Copper Mountain, U.S. Coaches Peter Foley
and Jan Wengelin will name riders for World Cup events in Europe
starting Nov. 16 in Tignes, France. The U.S. team leaves Tuesday.

Klug had a two-run time of 1:06.90 to edge U.S. Snowboard Team rider
Pete Thorndike (Meredith, NH), whose time was 1:07.52. Third place went
to Ian Price (Bend, OR), who was .02 back of Thorndike. Sixty-four men
raced.

In the women's event, Fletcher cruised to victory by more than 3.5
seconds, winning in 1:12.72. Runnerup was Claire Cetera (Sun Valley, ID)
with a time of 1:16.23. Canadian Michelle Charles was third in the field
of 36 with a 1:17.93 clocking.
