TRAA WINS GOLD (AGAIN)
Freestyle World Championships Close
BLACKCOMB, B.C. (Jan. 21) - The sun broke through
the clouds in time for
France's Stephane Yonnet and Norway's Kari Traa to
secure the dual mogul
titles at the FIS World Freestyle Ski
Championships. This is Traa's
second world championship title for the week
winning single moguls on
Friday.
Only two Americans made it into finals both Ann
Battelle (Steamboat
Springs, CO) and Jillian Vogtli (Park City, UT)
finishing sixth and
eighth, respectfully. This is Battelle's first
event back from a
preseason shoulder injury . "I'm not happy
but I'm coming back from an
injury so I have to give myself a little bit of
credit .while I didn't
do great it is still a confidence builder and I
hope I can carry it in
to next week," she said.
"There were some good moments of skiing but
no one really put together a
super solid run so that was disappointing,"
said U.S. Moguls Technical
Coach Liz McIntyre. "It's a difficult course
and you can't afford to
make any mistakes on it and this is the first
duals [of the season] and
we haven't really been concentrating much on duals
although I think it
is a good way for the skiers to push their
limits."
Vogtli skied against tough competition including
'98 Olympic gold
medalist Tae Satoya (Japan) and Aiko Uemura
(Japan), currently ranked
fifth in the world. "I'm really happy
with the way I skied against the
people I skied against and I took my skiing up a
few notches today. I'm
just pushing it .it was a lot faster than I've
been skiing so I'm just
getting use to that feeling . to ski it down
rather than fighting it
down," said Vogtli.
The U.S. men's team had disappointing results with
rookie Ryan Riley
(Steamboat Springs, CO) being the top American
just missing the last
round prior to the finals. Earlier in the
rounds he knocked out fellow
teammate Toby Dawson (Vail, CO).
World Cup competition resumes Jan. 27-28 at Sunday
River, Maine.
